The
climatic conditions and the morphology of the ground have led
to the creation of a complex landscape in the village of Agia
Marina Kelokedaron. Woodland and cultivated land exist at the
same time.
The main cultivations,
which thrive in the village, are olive trees, almond trees,
locust trees and vineyards. The villagers also cultivate cereals,
pulse and vegetables.
Because of the dry climate and the low rainfall of the area,
the plantations, which are cultivated, are those who do not
need great quantity of water to survive. The farmers begin
the cultivation in autumn and the procedure is completed before
Christmas, so that the cultivations take advantage of the
winter’s increased rainfall.
In older times, the cultivation of the land
was made with a plough, which helped the farmers to improve
the result, but still it was a very hard job. For the transportation
of their goods, the villagers used donkeys, as there were
no cars.
The
constant exploitation of the land was, in a matter of fact,
a great need of the inhabitants so that they could support
their families. As in older times families had many members,
the biggest part of the harvest was consumed to cover their
needs and it was not sold to third parties. The products of
the cultivations met the nutrition needs of the families for
an entire year and for that reason the farmers had storage
houses to keep them.
We presume that the harvest must have been
big, because it was not only enough for the support of the
families but it was also sold in other villages. The average
number of family members in the village was nine. A research,
which was conducted in 1920 shows that there were only seventeen
families and the number of children, was one hundred and thirty
two.
As
we mentioned above there are not only cultivated parts in
the village but also woodland where you will find a great
sample of the Cypriot flora and which gives a unique color
in the village.
We must note that the physical environment
of Agia Marina Kelokedaron combines the cultivations with
the wild Cypriot flora. Without any doubt, the physical environment
has influenced the habitants’ life who exploited their land
and managed to develop their cultivations. In previous years
the nutrition and the entire income of the villagers was based
on the cultivation of the land.
In
the village there were many traditional taps, which covered
the needs in water (drinking, washing) of the inhabitants.
When they wanted to wash their clothes, they carried them
to the taps. They put them in basins, boiled the water, added
soap and washed them out.
Nowadays, only three traditional taps
remain in the village and they will be restored in the near
future.
